Plastics can be easily moulded, extruded and pressed due to their plasticity. The different processes used in the production of plastics are extrusion, injection moulding, blow moulding, vacuum forming, compression moulding and rotational moulding.

Production processes
The different processes used by plastic manufacturers are:
Extrusion
Thermoplastic granules are fed from a hopper by rotating a screw in a heated cylinder. The tapered screw compacts the plastic as it gets heated. The cross-section of the extrusion is determined by the die fitted at the end of the extruder. This method is used to produce tubes, pipes, fencing, window frames and more.
Injection moulding
Powder or granules are fed from a hopper into a steel barrel with a rotating screw. The barrel is heated and the screw is forced back as the plastic collects at the end of the barrel. Once the melted plastic gets collected the hydraulic ram is used to force the thermoplastic into the moulded cavity. It is used to make products like containers, bowls, buckets and more.
Blow moulding
A hollow length of plastic called a parison is extruded between the two parts of a mould. The mould is closed and compressed air is passed through the parison which pushes the plastic against the walls of the mould. This process is used to make bottles and hollow toys.
Vacuum forming
The platen and the mould are attached and the plastic material is clamped in an air-tight gasket. It is then heated from above and the plastic softens. Air is blown to raise the sheet before bringing it into contact with the mould. A vacuum pump is used to remove the air between the platen and the plastic. The atmospheric pressure at the top presses the plastic sheet into the mould. The forming is lifted from the mould and the mould is lowered.
Compression moulding
The mould is filled with a measured amount of plastic powder or granules. The mould is heated and the two parts of the mould are brought together. This compresses the plastic around the cavity and the plastic takes the shape. This process is used to make products like electrical fittings, saucepan handles and more.
Rotational moulding
A measured amount of plastic is placed inside a cold mould. The mould is closed and moved into an oven. The mould is rotated around the horizontal and vertical axis. As the mould rotates the plastic fuses and sticks to the mould surface. This process is used to make products like footballs, road cones and more.
